Church/Garden Fans.  I was reading a volume book that the ladies of our historical society put together.  One of the church entries cited how each parishioner was "handed a paddle fan and hymnal as they entered the church".  This kept the air circulating.  The backside of the fans were advertisements (usually the local funeral parlor).  Today, we honor that old tradition with beautiful designs (without the ad).......wonderful favors for the ladies!
